De vroege bezetting: ANDREW ELDRITCH GARY MARX: gitaar BEN GUNN: gitaar CRAIG ADAMS: bas en drumcomputer: DOKTOR AVALANCHE In 1984 wordt Ben Gunn vervangen door gitarist WAYNE HUSSEY (ex-Dead or Alive). In 1985 valt de groep uiteen. Hussey en Adams gaan verder als The Mission en zijn succesvol. Eldritch richt The Sisterhood op, is minder succesvol en verandert de naam van The Sisterhood weer in het oude Sisters of Mercy.
