biografische gegevens van jan akkerman Jan Akkerman (1946) is een Nederlandse jazz/rockgitarist die reeds beginjaren zestig aktief is bij groepen als Shakin' Heart, waar Jan samenwerkte met zanger Erik van Eldik, en Johnny & his Cellar Rockers. Tot de laatste groep behoorden ook gitarist Jan Burgers, pianist Hans Kuyt, bassist Cor Engelsma en drummer Pierre van der Linden. Jan Akkerman begint in 1965 een nieuwe band: The Hunters. De groep was redelijk constant van samenstelling en kende naast Jan Paul Hubert als zanger, Ron Bijtelaar als bassist en Sydney Wachtel als drummer. Het nummer "Russian Spy and I" uit 1966 gaf de groep nationale bekendheid. In 1968 vallen The Hunters uit elkaar en Jan vormt samen met zanger Kaz Lux, bassist Andre Reijnen en drummer Pierre van der Linden de groep Brainbox. Deze band scoort meerdere hits, waarbij te denken valt aan "Down man", "Sea of delight" en "Summertime". Jan verlaat Brainbox echter alweer in 1969 om toe te treden tot Focus. In Focus speelt Jan samen met zanger, toetsenist en fluitist Thijs van Leer, bassist Martijn Dresden (later vervangen door Cyril Havermans en die weer door Bert Ruiter) en drummer Hans Cleuver (later vervangen door Pierre van der Linden). Focus (en dus ook Jan Akkerman) breken internationaal door. In 1978 maakt Jan zijn eerste solo-lp, genaamd "Jan Akkerman" waarvoor hij een Edison ontvangt, en in hetzelfde jaar treedt hij op tijdens het vermaarde jazz-festival van Montreux. Vanaf nu horen we Jan steeds vaker als jazzgitarist. Er verschijnen albums met buitenlandse grootheden als de Duitse arrangeur Claus Ogerman (1978), de Duitse jazzpianist Joachim Kuhn (1979) en de Amerikaanse klarinettist Tony Scott (1977).
