biografische gegevens van giant sand GIANT SAND is een gitaarrockgroep die ontstaan is uit de groep Giant Sandworms. De groep is afkomstig uit Tucson, Arizona. Rond 1980 begint Howe Gelb daar met medewerking van de uit Chicago afkomstige Rainer Ptacek aan een lange reek albums met psychedelische countryrock, die ook invloeden kent van blues en folk. De groep kent in de jaren negentig een flink aantal afsplitsingen, bv. Calexico. Howe Gelb is sowieso te horen in een groot aantal country/americana-projecten.
