De groep wordt in 1968 gevormd en bestaat uit: DANNY HUTTON: zang CORY WELLS: zang CHUCK NEGRON: zang MIKE ALLSUP gitaar JIM GREENSPOON: keyboards JOE SCHERMIE: bas FLOYD SNEED: drums Three Dog Night is na de oprichting in 1968 vrijwel meteen succesvol. De single "One" komt in 1969 op de nummer-1 plaats terecht in de USA. Er volgen vervolgens vele successen, soms in de vorm van covers. Managers Bob Foster, Burt Jacobs en Bill Utley tillen de groep naar een hoog niveau. In 1977 gaat de groep uit elkaar.
