biografische gegevens van drifters The Drifters zijn een Amerikaanse rhythm & blues- groep die in 1953 ontstaat. De groep stond onder productionele leiding van Jerry Wexler en Ahmet Ertegun. De samenstelling veranderde echter steeds. In de periode 1953-1958 kende de groep achtereenvolgens de volgende leadzangers: Clyde McPhatter (ex-dominoes), David Baughan, Johnny Moore (ex-Hornets), Bobby Hendricks. In 1958 eindigt eigenlijk het bestaan van de 'echte' Drifters. De groep komt in handen van een nieuwe manager, George Treadwell. Als in 1959 Ben E. King de leadvocals op zich neemt hebben we te maken met een geheel nieuwe groep. Van de oorspreonkelijke rhythm & blues is weinig over. Ben E. King schrijft meet popmuziek: gevoelige ballades als 'There goes my baby'. De veranderingen in de bezetting blijven echter voortduren: Ben E. King vertrekt nog in 1959.
