biografische gegevens van kayak Kayak is een Nederlandse symfonische rockgroep uit de jaren 1972-1981. De groep komt voort uit de High Tide Formation. en debuteert in 1973 met het album "See See the Sun": MAX WERNER: zang TON SCHERPENZEEL: toetsen JOHAN SLAGER: gitaar CEES VAN LEEUWEN: bas PIM KOOPMAN: drums De allereerste bezetting kende Michel Marion nog als drummer, maar deze werd al snel door Pim Koopman vervangen. Pim Koopman bleek samen met Ton Scherpenzeel een prima songschrijvers-duo te zijn. In bovenstaande bezetting maakt de groep twee, sterk door Yes beinvloedde albums. De groep doet het goed en dat is mede te danken aan de enthousiaste inzet van manager Frits Hirschland. In 1975 verdwijnt Cees van Leeuwen uit de groep. De nieuwe bassist heet Bert Veldkamp. In 1976 besluit Pim Koopman te kiezen voor en baan als producer bij EMI. Ook hij verlaat de groep en richt oa. Diesel op. Bij Kayak verschijnt dan een totaal nieuwe ritmesektie. Op "Starlight Dancer" uit 1978 bestaat de groep uit: MAX WERNER: zang TON SCHERPENZEEL: toetsen JOHAN SLAGER: gitaar THEO DE JONG: bas CHARLES SCHOUTEN: drums "Starlight Dancer" komt echter niet goed tot zijn recht, en Ton Scherpenzeel besluit tot een stevige ingreep in de personeelsbezetting. De nieuwelingen verdwijnen weer: zo wordt Theo de Jong de nieuwe bassist van de groep Taurus. In de persoon van Edward Reekers wordt een nieuwe zanger gevonden. Bovendien worden The Kayettes aan de groep toegevoegd, een dames zangduo bestaande uit Irene Linders, de vrouw van Ton Scherpenzel, en Katherine Lapthorn. EDWARD REEKERS: zang TON SCHERPENZEEL: toetsen JOHAN SLAGER: gitaar PETER SCHERPENZEEL: bas .. broer van Ton Scherpenzeel MAX WERNER: drums, zang IRENE LINDERS: zang KATHERINE LAPTHORN: zang In 1979 verschijnt in de nieuwe nieuwe bezetting "Phantom of the night". De plaat wordt een groot succes en verkoopt zelfs tot in de Verenigde Staten. Kayak krijgt in dit jaar een Edison. Na 1980 neemt het succes van Kayak langszaam maar zeker af. Afzonderlijke leden beginnen aan (niet altijd even succesvolle) solo-albums, en in 1982 wordt Kayak opgeheven. In 1981 hadden enige ex-leden met hun aanhang nog een single gemaakt als De Advokaatjes, een éénmalig carnavalsproject. Edward Reekers had in 1980 al een solo-album op zijn naam gezet. Na 1982 treffen we hem op diverse albums als (veel gevraagd en goed gewaardeerd) achtergrondzanger. Max Werner was ook voor 1982 al aan een tweetal solo-albums begonnen. Hij zal de ingeslagen weg voortzetten.
